Sports Turf Northwest brought artificial turf maintenance equipment to the sports industry after a personal experience motivated one of the company’s founders to take action. In 2010, Sports Turf Northwest co-founder Craig Prunty had a first hand struggle with the Staphylococcus bacteria when his son contracted a Staph infection from playing sports; that’s when the search for a solution began. After the unsettling ordeal was over, Craig began to wonder how often this happened and what was being done to help protect athletes from Staph infections. He spoke with other parents and coaches, engaging anyone who would share their personal experiences. A little research showed that turf cleanliness has been an issue for some time; according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), certain sports have a higher rate of Staph and MRSA infections than others. The transmission of MRSA and Staph is made possible when one or more of the Five C’s outlined by the CDC is present: Crowding, Contact, Compromised skin, Contamination, and Cleanliness. Only one of the five C’s is needed to become infected with Staph or MRSA; while playing sports on synthetic turf, several or all five C’s are present, dramatically increasing the odds of acquiring MRSA or Staph.
It also became clear that many sports facilities, turf managers, and athletic directors are unaware of the dangers that synthetic turf poses. Around the country, facilities have been using one of two methods to sterilize synthetic turf: one is to let the sun kill the harmful microorganisms (however the ozone layer prevents this from being a real solution,) and the other is to spray the fields with chemicals. In response to all of this, Craig enlisted the help of two business partners, Mike Woelfel and Brian Grant, to help find a viable solution for keeping sports facilities as microbe-free as possible without the use of harsh chemicals. As a former NBA star with six kids of his own, Brian also felt inclined to help educate schools and sports facilities on the best methods for keeping kids and athletes safe from the threat of Staph and MRSA while playing on synthetic turf.
Sports Turf Northwest set about to find the most effective solution possible for sterilizing synthetic turf in order to protect athletes from exposure to harmful microorganisms. As it turned out, Greensgroomer Worldwide had the solution. Spraying the turf with chemicals seemed like replacing one possible risk with another. Greensgroomer Worldwide has more than 17 years in the turf maintenance business, starting with golf course maintenance equipment and later adding artificial turf maintenance equipment to its list of products, all manufactured in the United States. What really impressed Craig, Mike, and Brian was Greensgroomer Worldwide’s state-of-the-art technology–the GreenZapr™ and miniZapr™— equipment that utilizes innovative ultraviolet (UVC) light to exterminate dangerous bacteria. It turns out that UVC light, also called germicidal UVC, is proven technology that has been in use for more than 100 years.
In the late 1800s, a germicidal lamp using ultraviolet light was used to kill various types of microorganisms that generally cause indoor air quality problems like, mold, yeast, and other viruses. Greensgroomer Worldwide has adapted this clean, chemical-free technology for use on synthetic turf and other sports surfaces.
The GreenZapr™ offers operators of synthetic fields a solution to protect athletes from harmful microorganisms. This environmentally friendly piece of equipment destroys the DNA of viruses such as MRSA, Staph, C. diff, Hepatitis, E-Coli, Influenza and others that can live for days on synthetic turf. The GreenZapr™ is a cost effective alternative that protects the health of athletes, and eliminates the need to apply chemicals to your synthetic turf. The GreenZapr™ is perfect for sterilizing synthetic turf fields, and keeping athletes and kids safe.
For indoor use and smaller areas, the new miniZapr™ is vital to keeping synthetic turf sterilized. The miniZapr™ uses the same virus fighting technology as the GreenZapr™ on a reduced scale. Powered by a simple wall plug or optional generator, the miniZapr™ is as easy to use as a vacuum cleaner. The miniZapr™ is ideal for artificial turf in indoor soccer arenas; it can also be used in locker rooms, on gym equipment, in kids play areas, and any condensed space that is susceptible to microbe accumulation.
Sports Turf Northwest is proud to be an authorized dealer for the Greensgroomer Worldwide line of natural and synthetic turf maintenance equipment. We strongly believe that the equipment we represent is the best in the industry. How strong is our belief? We based our sister company, UVC Health Equipment, around the miniZapr™. There are plenty of industries that can benefit from UVC technology and we look forward to introducing the miniZapr™ to all of them!
